World War II Online Videos

This is a collection of the videos that I have made during my time in World War II Online.

If you have any questions, feel free to drop me an email, or contact me (Thorim) with a PM in the WW2OL Forums.

In the future I plan to add some sort of a tutorial on using the CaMle38 vs. aircraft, but I haven't decided exactly how to do that yet.

1st 'real' video (original "Verdun" video was a 45 second bit) a collection of shots from 2 days early in campaign #13, all scenes are from the Verdun/Etain area.

Verdun II

2nd video - focusing on the hated Stuka, and with new video editing software for much smoother scene transitions without the whiteout effect seen in Verdun II.  These shots are all in the Southern AO, but from a period after the scenes in Verdun II, and not focused so tightly, either in local (quite a few town areas in this one), or in time frame (probably 10 days from first scene to last).

Stuka Carnage!

A short bonus clip demonstrating what happens when a loaded Opel drives right up next to a CaMle 38.

Opel Rush.

This time, I try to demonstrate how to kill Messerschmitt's creations.

Messerschmitt Mayhem!

Sometimes, even a crappy infantryman like me gets lucky.  I grab an SMG and storm a CP, expecting the usual quick death...

Storming the CP!

Campaign 13, a look back at various footage taken in the campaign.

Carnage in the Skies

Lots of people have asked what I use to make these videos, so here is the simple list:

I send my '2nd monitor' signal via S-Video out to a Digital VHS recorder (any VCR should work) and store all of my raw footage on VHS tape (2.5~3 hours of raw footage per tape in highest quality mode on the VCR, depending on the tape.

I play back the VHS tape to an S-Video input on my video capture card (I use an Adaptec "VideOh! PCI" card), and capture the sequences that I'm interested in as Mpeg-2 maximum quality video clips which are saved seperately (ex: Stuka_01.mpg, Stuka_02.mpg, etc..).

Once I have enough clips that I feel like using to make a movie, I use Cyberlink Power Director 3 to do the actual editing and create the movie (I did not use this for the Verdun II movie, which is why the transitions suck so much more on it).  I chose this software purely on reviews I read, not on features etc, as I knew nothing about this when I bought it.  It works pretty well, but now that I'm using it, I'm always wishing for features it doesn't have :)  Chances are, I'd have to spend a lot more money (it cost $80) to get software that would do everything that I'd really like to do.  The biggest thing I want is for the software to natively support my capture card, which it doesn't do - something I didn't know to look for at the time.

I add sound by ripping a soundtrack to .mpg format with CDex, an excellent CD ripping software that I cannot recommend highly enough.

When I have everything edited to my satisfaction, I produce the movie to .wmv format using Power Director.  I've improved the quality by playing with the output settings, and I'm still not 100% satisfied that I'm at the best compromise point for quality vs. size yet.

Hopefully, I'll be adding a new video soon, if I get time to actually play any more in this campaign instead of working too much :)

Enjoy, groan, or whatever.
